What is art therapy?
The Canadian Art Therapy Association defines art therapy in this way: Art therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate.

Do I need to have any art skills or experience?
No art skills or experiences are required. The joy of art therapy is its exploratory nature, which allows for all skills and abilities to participate in the creative process. In fact, some pretty incredible healing can occur when we are using materials and skills that are outside of our comfort zone.

Will I be expected to make art every session?
There is no expectation to make art every session, but creative expression is encouraged. Depending on the therapeutic goals developed, I may prompt you to work on a specific activity or you may have open access to the studio space.

What will happen with my art work?
Throughout the course of treatment the art work will be held in a locked cabinet within the office space. When therapy is concluded you will be asked to take your art work home with you and I will retain digital images within your personal file.

What kind of art materials are available?
The studio is chalk-full of various new and recycled art materials. Some materials includes; paint, pencil crayons, chalk pastels, oil pastels, paint markers, clay, collage materials, fibre materials, multi-media, watercolour paints, glitter, natural objects, and found objects.
